How to Show Support on Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a time to honor those who have served our country and made tremendous sacrifices to preserve the American way of life. At Harbour’s Edge, there are many different ways you can show your support for the veterans in our local community. Read on to learn more about the special events and activities happening around this holiday.
Commemorative Actions for Veterans Day
Honoring those who have served our country doesn’t have to be complicated. Something as simple as recognizing their efforts and saying “thank you” goes a long way. If you’re wondering how you can show your appreciation, here are some commemorative actions just about anyone can take:
Perhaps the easiest thing you can do to show respect for current and former military members is to take the initiative and reach out. Whether it’s a phone call, lunch or even a letter, letting them know they’re remembered and appreciated is what Veterans Day is all about. Take the time to ask about their service and be there to listen.
Fly the Flag
The American flag is a tremendous symbol of both freedom and sacrifice. Veterans Day is a great occasion to proudly display the red, white and blue. It honors the contributions our military members have made, and serves as a reminder that our freedoms have been hard-earned by those in our local communities.
Make a Donation
Even if there aren’t any veterans in your life, there are numerous worthy organizations that support our military members. Options range from national nonprofits like the Wounded Warrior Project to the local Delray Beach American Legion Post. No matter how large or small your contribution, it still serves to make an impact on the lives of those who have served our country.
Moment of Silence
In 2016 the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act was signed into law. The Act calls on all Americans to voluntarily pause for two minutes of silence on Nov. 11 to honor our veterans. The idea is for the silence to occur simultaneously across the country, starting at 2:11 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
In-Person Opportunities for Harbour’s Edge & Delray Beach
At Harbour’s Edge we work hard to make sure our veterans are celebrated and appreciated. There are several events in the community and surrounding Delray Beach area to recognize their contributions to our country. These are some of the ways you can show your support in person:
Golf Cart Parade
The golf cart parade at Harbour’s Edge brings together creativity and celebration. Golf carts are decorated in teams, with memorable past themes including an Army tank and Air Force plane. Starting at 11:00 a.m. on Nov. 11, residents gather to cheer on the golf carts as they circle the community and a marching band plays. After the parade is complete, the Delray Beach Fire Department does a flag raising and gives thanks to veterans.
Veterans Day Brunch
Following the golf cart parade, Harbour’s Edge residents are invited to join in a commemorative brunch. Dining venues are decorated with military decor, and tables are filled with notes from local school children thanking veterans for their service. There is also a video tribute from families and team members, sharing memories and offering thanks and appreciation.
Veterans Day Displays
The community at Harbour’s Edge makes sure veterans are celebrated more than just one day. Resident veterans are honored the entire week with a large poster featuring a current image of them holding a photo of themselves during their military service. This is accompanied by a scrapbook that details personal history that can be shared with friends and family. Additionally, throughout the holiday season there’s a veterans tree that features every resident veteran’s photo on an ornament.
In addition to all of the events happening at Harbour’s Edge, many of the surrounding cities have their own parades and ceremonies to honor local veterans. The Veterans Day parade in Delray Beach typically takes place on the morning of Nov. 11 at Veterans Park. Also be sure to check with local businesses and restaurants about any available promotions. Many offer free meals or discounts to those who have served.
Honor Veterans Day Virtually
With virtual events becoming more common in our everyday lives, there are a number of ways to connect with veterans and make them feel appreciated, even if you can’t be together in person. Here are a few ideas:
Video Call & Email
Though the modern virtual world makes us more connected in theory, it can also leave many feeling isolated. Something as simple as seeing a familiar smiling face or receiving unexpected words of encouragement can go a long way. If you can’t connect in person, use the options at your disposal to remind the veterans in your life they’re appreciated.
Remember the History
As time passes, it becomes easier to forget the details of the sacrifices made by our country’s military members. Veterans Day is a good opportunity to remind yourself of the history that allows us to enjoy the freedoms we have today.
Many branches of the military including the Navy and Air Force offer virtual tours of their National Museums. This can be a great way to gain a deeper appreciation for everything our veterans have experienced and accomplished. The American Legion also offers a comprehensive photo gallery that keeps you connected with events celebrating veterans across the country.
